Commercial roof surveys in Bristol
Roofcheck provides commercial and industrial roof surveys across Bristol and the West of England, for the people who run its hospitals, universities, colleges, shopping centres, port and distribution parks and need an exact record of each roof. Moisture mapping, thermography, electronic leak detection, drone and RAAC surveys reach the BS postcode area, from Clifton and Bedminster to Filton, Avonmouth, Portishead and Keynsham.

The roofs we survey here
Bristol’s commercial roofs run from Southmead Hospital and the city centre’s hospitals to the University of Bristol’s new campus by Temple Meads, UWE’s Frenchay campus, Cabot Circus and Cribbs Causeway, and out to the warehouses and port buildings of Avonmouth.
Warehouses on the Severn shore take the wind straight off the estuary, and the city centre’s Georgian terraces and post-war blocks hide flat roofs, valley gutters and lead-lined outlets that are easy to miss from the street.
Southmead and the city’s hospitals
Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which brings together North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, runs Southmead Hospital, with its Brunel building, and the city site’s Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Bristol Heart Institute. Thermography and moisture mapping read their ward and theatre roofs from above, so clinical work goes on below.
Universities and City of Bristol College
The University of Bristol’s Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus is directly connected to Temple Meads and overlooks the harbourside, UWE Bristol teaches most of its students at Frenchay and its creative courses at Bower Ashton, Spike Island, Arnolfini and Watershed, and City of Bristol College has centres across the city. Labs, studios and workshops are surveyed in visits agreed with each estates team.
RAAC and schools
No Bristol school or college was on the Department for Education’s last published list of settings with confirmed RAAC, and the BS area’s one was a secondary school in North Somerset. Flat concrete roofs from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s on the city’s clinics, libraries and offices can still hold the planks, and a RAAC survey finds out.
Cabot Circus and Cribbs Causeway
Cabot Circus mixes high street names and local independents with a cinema in the city centre, and Cribbs Causeway calls itself the South West’s premier shopping and leisure destination. Electronic leak detection finds breaches in the flat roofs over their malls and stores without lifting the membrane, so both stay open.
Avonmouth and the port
The Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area runs five miles along the Severn Estuary across 1,800 hectares of land for large-scale industrial, distribution, energy and waste businesses, with 17 kilometres of flood defences being built along its shore, and The Bristol Port Company runs a deep sea port with 575 direct employees and 10,000 jobs that depend on port businesses. Sheds and warehouses this size are mapped by drone, with thermography to find wet insulation.
Solar on sheds
Before solar goes onto an Avonmouth shed or a city centre office, a condition survey and moisture mapping should show that the deck beneath is dry, so the panels are never laid over a problem.

Questions about roof surveys
Can you survey a hospital, school or campus without disrupting it?
Yes. Surveys are carried out from the roof, and visits are planned around clinical areas, term dates and building access. Any method that needs access inside the building, such as some RAAC inspections, is agreed with you beforehand.
Can you check a Bristol school or public building for RAAC?
Yes. A RAAC survey confirms whether panels are present, records cracking, deflection and water staining, and sets out a next step for each area. It is worth considering for any flat-roofed building from the mid-1950s to the mid-1990s.
Do you survey warehouses and port buildings in Bristol, at Avonmouth?
Yes. Distribution sheds, port warehouses and plant buildings along the Severn shore are mapped by drone and thermography, with access agreed with each occupier and the port.
Do you offer pre-solar roof surveys?
Yes. Before panels go on, a condition survey and moisture mapping show whether the roof needs work first. Once the panels are up, anything the roof needs means lifting them first, and the bill for that dwarfs the cost of a survey.
Can you survey roofs at Southmead Hospital and the universities in Bristol?
Yes. Ward, lab and studio roofs are surveyed from above with thermography and electronic leak detection, in visits planned with each estates team.
What roof systems do you survey?
All the main systems on UK commercial roofs: single ply membranes from manufacturers such as Bauder, IKO, Fatra, Renolit and Sika Sarnafil, built-up felt, liquid applied coatings, mastic asphalt, profiled metal and standing seam.
Can you survey several buildings across Bristol and beyond?
Yes. For estates and portfolios, every building can be surveyed to the same scope, with reports in the same format so they can be compared side by side.
Do you survey Cabot Circus and other shopping centre roofs in Bristol?
Yes. Mall, store and car park roofs are tested with electronic leak detection and moisture mapping, with access agreed with each centre’s management.
Do you work on tenanted buildings?
Yes. One report can serve the landlord, the tenant, the contractor and the insurer, so everyone works from the same findings.
How much does a roof survey in Bristol cost?
Cost depends on the roof area, the roof system and the methods needed. Call 0113 868 0097 or start a quote online with the approximate roof area and what you need to find out, and you’ll receive a written quote.
Do you cover the towns around Bristol?
Yes. Surveys cover Bristol and the BS area around it, from Clifton, Filton and Kingswood to Avonmouth, Portishead, Clevedon, Keynsham and Yate.
